Bread and Butter Pudding
Layers of buttered bread baked in vanilla custard until golden and wobbly. The ultimate use for stale bread — nursery comfort at its best.

Ingredients
Step 1 — Assemble pudding
- 8 slices white bread (stale, buttered)
- ½ cup raisins or sultanas
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 3 eggs
- ¼ cup sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Nutmeg (grated)
- Pinch of salt

Layer bread
Cut buttered bread into triangles. Layer in a buttered baking dish with raisins, sprinkling nutmeg between layers.

Pour custard and bake
Whisk milk, cream, eggs, sugar, vanilla, and salt. Pour over bread. Let soak 15 minutes. Bake at 350°F 35–40 minutes until set and golden.

Serve warm with custard or cream.
