French toast the proper way — thick slices of day-old bread soaked in vanilla custard, fried in butter until golden. 'Lost bread' that finds its way to heaven.

Ingredients
Step 1 — Custard
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
- Pinch of nutmeg
Step 2 — Fry
- 8 thick slices day-old brioche or challah
- 4 tbsp butter
- Powdered sugar (for serving)
- Maple syrup or berry compote

Make the custard
Whisk eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, salt, and nutmeg in a shallow dish.

Soak the bread
Dip bread slices in custard 20 seconds per side — they should absorb the mixture but not fall apart.

Fry and serve
Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat. Cook bread 3–4 minutes per side until deeply golden. Serve immediately dusted with powdered sugar and drizzled with syrup or berry compote.
